This Entrepreneur Just Disrupted The Way Women Talk Sports With Goalposte

Jane Wu Brower is changing the sports conversation for women. The attorney and management consultant is the woman behind Goalposte, a daily newsletter that summarizes major sports stories in a fun and accessible way.

Goalposte was created for casual sports fans or novices who are seeking an easy and unintimidating means of navigating the world of sports, where heavy stats and historical comparisons predominate. Goalposte’s mission is to help level the playing field for young professional women, who may more often feel alienated in sports conversations with coworkers, bosses, interviewers and clients.

Brower developed the idea for Goalposte during her time as an attorney working on a case defending Major League Baseball. Throughout the course of the lawsuit, she was expected to interact with high-level baseball executives and attend sports business development events, but she often fell silent when the conversation turned to sports. Unfortunately, she had not followed sports when she was growing up and decided that she wanted to begin to learn. Brower found that there were plenty of resources for avid sports fans, but none for novices to begin to follow along and get up to speed.

“It was very challenging for me to leave my stable career in management consulting,” Brower said. “However, I ultimately felt compelled to go, because I wanted to create something and I perceived a real need in the marketplace. I wanted to invest my time and hard work into a career that I felt passionate about and where I would have some skin in the game. So far, it has been a challenging and thrilling experience. My greatest hope is that Goalposte helps to level the playing field for other professional women who might find themselves in a similar position to the one that I faced, whether it be with colleagues, bosses, or in social settings.”
