What is “Doctor Me First” about?

The Doctor Me First Podcast consists of authentic conversations between Dr. Errin Weisman and other female physicians. There’s one piece of prep work for every guest: pick one word to frame their conversation around. No more feeling alone in medicine. Doctor Me First podcast is a community of truth speakers, lifesavers and fierce females who want to support one another.

Dr. Weisman started the podcast because she couldn’t find anything or anyone out there that 100 percent understood her situation as a female physician struggling with burnout. She wanted to give others the reassurance that they would be okay and are NOT crazy or broken for wanting something different. She wanted to tell others like her that change is possible. She’s living proof. No one was talking about burnout in a practical, tangible way. To improve, she needed and wanted clear action steps, not lofty concepts. She wanted to spread her experience and knowledge from her own life and the work that she was doing with clients to others on a broader scale. Dr. Weisman wanted to add my voice to the physician wellness discussion. She wanted to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

Why should people listen to it? Who is the podcast for?

Doctor Me First is a podcast and community for physicians who are tired of letting an outdated healthcare system define them. No matter what you want to do, you belong here. You know how I know this? Because I’ve talked to hundreds of physicians who have redefined what it means to be a “successful” doctor. Some of them stayed in medicine. Some of them left. All of them are changing the future of physician wellness. Your purpose, your life and your calling matter.

Featured episode – Fierce Self-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff

How does compassion impact life? This is something that I’ve spent years studying and have written several books about. She’s specifically interested in compassion in women and why that’s necessary for wellness. Dr. Kristin Neff is one of the world’s leading experts on self-compassion. In fact, she was the first to operationally define and measure the construct. Listen as I do a bit of fangirling and we talk about this very important topic.

Dr. Neff designed an eight-week course to help teach the skills necessary to develop healthy self-compassion both personally and professionally. But why does this particular skill intrigue her? She became very interested in the practice of Buddhism as she was going through her graduate program. Self-compassion is one of the core tenets. After realizing that there wasn’t much scientific research about the idea, she took the field on. Listen as she shares the definition of self-compassion and why it’s more important now than ever. She also delves into the place of self-compassion in a post-MeToo world and how you can start to work on being more compassionate to yourself today.
