Unpack How Limiting Beliefs From Childhood Impact Adulthood

Unpacked: How to Detach From the Subconscious Beliefs That Are Sabotaging Your Life examines the subconscious beliefs we absorb during childhood. These beliefs often continue to shape our adult lives in limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging actions. Through personal narrative, client case studies and practical exercises, the book reveals how these beliefs form, why they persist and how we can detach from them to live with greater clarity, confidence and self-compassion. invites readers on a transformative journey to unpack the emotional baggage of their past and realign their lives with who they truly are, not who they were taught to be.

Kristen Jacobsen, LCPC, shares vignettes from her life, including growing up amid emotional immaturity and developing OCD as a child. She describes her shift from a people-pleasing therapist to an empowered, boundary-setting adult. Jacobsen also includes real client stories. Kelly battled with burnout from hypervigilance. Linda feared success stemming from childhood doubt.

These stories highlight how core beliefs manifest in diverse, relatable ways. Each reveals a universal truth: what you learned to believe in childhood is not your destiny. Through honest introspection and mindful action, Unpacked empowers readers to stop living out old scripts and start creating a life aligned with their authentic selves.

The book covers the following:

  • Core beliefs shape our reality. Many adult struggles stem from subconscious beliefs formed in early childhood through unmet emotional needs or misinterpreted experiences.
  • Self-sabotage is a survival strategy. Behaviors like perfectionism, people-pleasing and emotional withdrawal often began as protective mechanisms but became roadblocks in adulthood.
  • Awareness is the first step to change. Identifying and understanding your limiting beliefs is essential to replacing them with healthier, more empowering narratives.
  • Healing doesn’t require blame. This journey isn’t about faulting parents or caregivers but about interpreting your past with clarity and choosing to grow beyond it.
  • You can rewire your mind. Practical exercises and real-life strategies show how to challenge negative beliefs, manage your nervous system and embrace lasting personal growth.

Why should people read it? Who is the book for?

This book is for anyone who struggles with limiting beliefs and is looking for self-awareness and change. You’ll reflect on your past, understand your core beliefs and move forward with greater clarity and intention.

If you’ve ever felt that your needs aren’t important, that you can’t trust others or that your voice isn’t valued, you may be carrying beliefs from the past that have impacted your choices and relationships. These beliefs often develop as protective mechanisms, helping us navigate difficult experiences in childhood. As we grow into adulthood, they can turn into patterns that affect our well-being, happiness and connections.
