Rants & Raves: Women Entrepreneurial Activity Up 10 Percent, Alec Baldwin Dives Into Creepsterville & Lupita Brings Wakanda To Life

Like we've been telling you, women entrepreneurs are crushing it worldwide. Alec Baldwin gets a bit creepy and Lupita acts so good we forget Wakanda is fake.

Rave

Women’s entrepreneurial activity is up 10 percent. The latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Women’s Report finds an estimated 163 million women launching new ventures while 111 million are running established businesses. Get, ’em, gals! As we’ve been telling you here at Lioness, women are founding companies at a historic rate. The report, released on Sept. 7, covers 63 economies also reveals the gender gap (ratio of women to men participating in entrepreneurship) narrowed by 5 percent.

It’s an exciting time to be a women in business. Let’s do more to back these women and their killer ideas.

Rant

I’m a Alec Baldwin fan. Loved him since I was kid watching him star in “Beetlejuice” all the way to his grown-man status in “It’s Complicated.” I appreciate people who voice their opinion, even if it’s unpopular, and I’ve always put him in that category. (He was one of my favorite guests on Jon Favreau’s “Dinner for Five.” And the episode with him and Carrie Fisher? Gold). But, whoa. What happened when prresident of HBO Documentary Films Sheila Nevins was on his WNYC podcast?

When chatting to the long-time married Nevins, Baldwin said, “There is this ‘woman’ thing about you . . . and you look phenomenal, by the way. There’s this thing about you: You bathe in this world of the stark and the real, but there is a part of me that [thinks] you want to be in love again. I see you in a bathrobe on a terrace in Paris, and you’re just having the longest kiss in the world. Is that what you want?”

Jezebel broke down the awkward exchange:

ALEC: There’s something about you, there’s this woman thing about you, you go and make this effort, and the beautification and kind of corrections and all this other stuff—you look phenomenal, by the way.

There’s this thing about you: You bathe in this world of the stark and the real, but there is a part of me that [thinks] you want to be in love again. I see you in a bathrobe on a terrace in Paris, and you’re just having the longest kiss in the world. Is that what you want?

SHEILA: I think that’s what you want.

I already have that, actually.

I don’t really wanna be in a bath robe on a terrace. It’s a good thing you’re not my psychiatrist.

You don’t want to be in love again? Passion? Romance?

No. I wanna make the best documentary in the world.

That’s it?

That’s it! That’s all I want! I want people to buy my book!

I just offered you love, romance, bath robe, Paris, and you’d rather…

I don’t want it. I don’t believe it. I want to make a documentary that wins a prize.

That’s why you’re the greatest.”

Ummm…Toto, I have a feeling we’ve entered creepsterville. We’ve all met those who are brilliant, attractive and rocking life. And, we can all get a bit swoony when we meet those types. Even if we blush or feel so enthralled to mention how attractive they are, there is a line of inappropriateness that shouldn’t be crossed. You, my friend, just did a backward twist with an insanely impressive tuck off of the springboard into the creepy, perv deep end of the pool.

Kudos to Nevins for holding her own.

Rave

Keep this in mind. I am not a comic book consumer at all. The closest I get to Marvel and DC Comics is at the movie theaters. But this week British Airways Magazine came under Twitter fire for writing actress Lupita N’yongo is from the fictional African country, Wakanda, the place where the upcoming Marvel movie “Black Panther” is set.

FACE PALM. We know crap happens. If you’re in publishing, at some point in your career, you’ve seen something that has gone to print and thought – “shit, shit, shit.” In my old days of newspaper layout, if your editor didn’t catch it, or no one else did during second rounds of proofing, on rare occasions someone in the Art Department would make a game-saving catch before something went to the printer.

But this error, I’m going to say, is a rave for their publication. Who the heck ever talks about the magazines on airplanes? British Airways for the win.

What are you ranting and raving about this week?
