Nesha Sanghavi, owner of University Girls Apparel, is the featured entrepreneur in a new textbook titled Management, published by Wiley, which will be used on college campuses across the U.S.
In October 2013, Wiley, a major publishing company, published a new textbook titled “Management,” which introduces a new approach to a common business school subject, management. The textbook is co-authored by Christopher Neck, Charles Lattimer, and Jeffrey Houghton, and is currently being used on college campus classrooms across the U.S.
Nesha Sanghavi, entrepreneur and owner of University Girls Apparel, a national brand of women’s collegiate clothing, is the featured entrepreneur in Chapter 18 of the textbook, “Entrepreneurship and Innovation.” The textbook features a series titled, “Voices of Management,” which highlights successful, real businesses and their owners, offering students a real-life example to apply the content of the chapter they are studying.
In the “Voices of Management” inset, Sanghavi shares her story of leaving her job in the financial industry to pursue her passion and start a fashion clothing brand for universities in the US. She identified a niche in the women’s collegiate apparel market that was underserved, fashionable clothing for alumni female fans that were of average sizes.
“[UG Apparel] has styles that women of all ages love to wear in their everyday lives. I wanted clothes that were fashionable, but were also made and fitted for real women of all sizes, not just students,”Sanghavi said.
She explained the challenges and obstacles she faced while building her business, as well as her many successes. Today her brand is licensed for 20 top universities across the U.S., and is growing each year. “My big goal is to grow the line to represent all the major colleges in the country,” she shared. Her inspiration came from the loyalty and enthusiasm of sports fans who love to wear the colors of their school. “I love the idea of community within sports. People are passionate about sports. It brings them together. I wanted to stay close to that.”
The authors of “Management” believe that young managers can contribute to building a more sustainable future by making decisions that are more acutely informed by their ability to see, think, apply, analyze, design, integrate, and evaluate systems and patterns of behavior. In order to do this, students and instructors need a new principles of management textbook to address today’s challenges and opportunities, with a new approach to content, pedagogy, and style.
Sanghavi’s story of her entrepreneurial journey, helps to prove this new strategy of management the authors have introduced. Her story is profiled alongside other famous entrepreneurs such as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates.
