In 2003 Kate Kane, CLU, CTLC, became managing director with the Zuzolo Northwestern Mutual network office in Springfield, Mass. She reached this role after spending 13 years with Northwestern Mutual in various staff positions and then in 1998 becoming a financial representative, with the goal of moving into field leadership. She has reached, and exceeded that goal, by applying her leadership talent to the Managing Director Association (MDA), where she is the first female president.
“Kate is one of the most loyal managing directors in our system today,” said Managing Partner Jeff Zuzolo. “Her diverse career path has given us a mutli-dimensional view of vision and leadership.”
What’s the secret to becoming a successful managing director? When you ask Kate Kane, she describes a complex dance of priorities that one must master in order to master the role. “I expect to be always moving and continuously prioritize what needs to be done next and what can wait,” she said. “I remind myself that it’s a privilege to be given multiple responsibilities.”
At the heart of Kane’s success as a managing director are her three core values – generosity, abundance and personal responsibility. Her third core value is particularly relevant for her as a young woman in the financial services industry. “It’s challenging any time you are the only one, or one of few,” she said. “But it also gives you the opportunity to share your unique perspectives and make change happen.”
Kane wants to continue to lead and has set exceptional goals for recruiting over the second half of 2014. Her team shares that she leads with both head and heart – whether it’s coaching new representatives or working with clients to plan their financial futures.
