I Own A Franchise – Acti-Kare

I own a franchise is a monthly feature on female entrepreneurs who are taking advantage of franchise opportunities. This month we're talking to Jennifer Kinsman of Acti-Kare.

I own a franchise

Name: Jennifer Kinsman

Company:  Acti-Kare

Location:  Granville, Massachusetts, USA

Website:   www.actikare.com

What you do: Right now I am spending most of my time organizing my website, paperwork, interviewing caregivers, and setting up systems for my future employees and clients.  Eventually I plan to spend my time running a smooth as silk operation that matches qualified caregivers to seniors and other people who need competent care in their own homes.

No. of Years with them:  I just recently purchased the franchise and received my license from the state two weeks ago.  I hope to have many successful years with Acti-Kare in the future.

Franchise Fee:  Although it depends on the chosen territory and its population, my particular franchise fee was approximately $22,000.

Why did you decide to open a franchise?  Being laid off from a job I really enjoyed was no picnic, but it did offer me some time to reflect and realize I was eager to have more control over something I could build up myself.  This business addresses a vital need, and has a “feel good” aspect to it as well; it feels like an excellent match.

What do you like about being a part of a larger company?  There is a strong and very responsive team behind me with a long history of experience in this field.  This makes it all the more appealing.  Also, fellow franchisees have been extremely helpful with hints and tips on how to make the business work well.

What are some positives and negatives involved with being a franchise owner?  On the plus side, there are countless opportunities to meet new people and learn more each week about my own expanded community.  There is a definite sense of satisfaction in owning something tangible with this business, and providing a much needed service.  I suppose if a franchise owner were easily distracted, it may be difficult to stick to the plan of the day, and that could detract from the franchisee’s success.  However, if this business is as busy as it should be, the days should sail by without time for lengthy distractions.

Who should consider becoming a franchise owner with your company?  Acti-Kare has an appeal to anyone who likes to work at a fast pace, meet new people, and may have a background in social services. Someone who likes that feeling of making connections and helping others live life to the fullest extent possible should explore this avenue.  I also like to think that solid sense of humor and a common sense approach to each day are key traits for someone interested in working with caregivers and seniors.
