Rails Girls, a free two-day workshop for beginners that focuses on the Web application framework Ruby on Rails, will be hosted in Baton Rouge on Feb. 19-20, 2016.
Rails Girls is a program founded in Finland with the aim of making technology more approachable for girls and women. Now, the non-profit organization hosts workshops internationally and teaches programming skills to female audiences.
The 12-hour Baton Rouge workshop will involve small-group working sessions and short talks focused on programming, design, and Web topics. Attendees will learn sketching, prototyping, and basic programming skills necessary to begin “building their ideas.”
Ruby on Rails is one of the most popular Web application frameworks. It’s an open-source framework, so users don’t need to pay for database access or specialized tools to learn and program.
The Baton Rouge event will be presented by Louisiana Women in Technology (LAWiT), with assistance from STEMup BR and the Louisiana Technology Park. The event is co-organized by:
- Dr. James Davis, PhD., LSU MBA faculty member.
- Czarina Walker, founder and CEO of InfiniEDGE Software, a custom Web and mobile app development company.
- Kim Fossey, STEM education advocate at STEMup BR.
- Kristen Reeves, executive director at LAWiT.
“There is nothing that tops having industry professionals provide hands on training to share their enthusiasm for their craft and wealth of knowledge that they have,” says Walker.
Rails Girls will be held at the Louisiana Technology Park at 7117 Florida Blvd., in the Bon Carré Business Center. The workshop will begin Friday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 PM for a two-hour “installation party” in which Ruby on Rails will be installed on laptops.
On the following day, the crash course will begin at 9:00 a.m. and last until 7:00 p.m., by which time attendees will have built their first application. An off-site after party will follow.
Instruction will be lead by Dr. Davis and team.
“As the father of three daughters, I want them to feel empowered by technology and not intimidated by it,” says Davis.
