How To Take Yourself From Passive To Powerful

By Kim L. Clark There are two types of people in this world — those who make things happen and those who allow things to happen to them. Don't let life just happen. Here's how to go from passive to powerful.

There are two types of people in this world — those who make things happen and those who allow things to happen to them.  Reader friend, I am certain that you aspire to be the first type, a mover and shaker take-charge professional who knows how to make the best things happen.

But occasionally, your strategies will not produce the expected outcomes. Other times, responsibilities and obligations can pile on to a distressing level. Such events might cause even high-performing entrepreneurs and solopreneurs to feel distraught, or even helpless.

When challenging times drain your energy and confidence, University of Florida psychologist Timothy Judge encourages you to give yourself a pep talk to help you remember that come what may, you are in control of your life and destiny. The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune may at times cause you to feel too frightened or demoralized to accept that truth but rest assured, it is always possible to have both hands on the wheel of your life. The destination and route are up to you.  What do you want to achieve and how do you want to make it happen?

Should feelings of despair cloud your self-confidence, gently but firmly take yourself out of the dark side. Breathe. Forgive yourself for being human and making mistakes.  Remember that you are the guiding force in your life and business.

Research conducted by Judge and his team indicates that those who accept that they are in charge of their lives have faith in their capabilities and as a result, they’re both much better at positioning themselves to capitalize on opportunities and avoiding obstacles that block success. When you acknowledge that you are your own boss, you will develop an inner core of resolve and purpose that gives you resilience, the attribute that allows you to roll with the punches and bounce back, better prepared and more nimble this time.

According to Judge et al., those who acknowledge and embrace their power to impact the trajectory of their lives are able to manage feelings of fear or stress differently and more effectively than do the passive personality types, who are prone to allow life and events to control them. The powerful get busy when adversity strikes, while the passive are inclined to accept negative circumstances as inevitable and conclude that there is no recourse. They give up.

The ability to manage emotions and remain calm under intense pressure has a direct link to performance. The ability to perform well has a direct link to success.  Prepare yourself to face down challenges by accepting that good times never last forever. Change is inevitable. Optimism leavened by pragmatism support resilience. The time to begin the transformation from passive to powerful is now.
